October Author: Melissa Darby
Friday, September 16th, 3:00 pm
This month will feature author, archeologist and historian Melissa Darby. Ms. Darby currently serves on the faculty at Portland State University's Anthropology Department where she specializes in the ethnohistory of Native peoples of the Columbia Basin. She will discuss her book "Thunder Go North: the Hunt for Sir Francis Drake's Fair and Good Bay" which explores the question of where Francis Drake landed the Golden Hind in the summer of 1579. Melissa Darby's research on Native American cultures of the lower Columbia River includes important works on settlement patterns, plankhouse architecture, and plant foods used by the indigenous people of the region. She has contributed substantially to our understanding of the Native peoples and the world they inhabited prior to European colonization.
