About this event

WLLO Village Monday Ted Talks

WLLO (West Linn, Lake Oswego) hosts a running series of Monday Ted Talks, open to all villagers.

Every Monday at 1 pm they watch a pre-selected Ted Talk via Zoom, followed by a discussion and ideas for next week. They often enjoy lunch while meeting.

Topics for Nov 16th:

EXPANDING YOUR CIRCLE OF COMPASSION

18 Minutes

It's hard to show compassion -- even to the people we love, but Robert Thurman asks that we develop compassion for our enemies. He prescribes a seven-step meditation exercise to extend compassion beyond our inner circle.

Robert Thurman is the first American to be ordained a Tibetan Monk by the Dalai Lama. He is a scholar, author and tireless proponent of peace.

A VIRUS DETECTION NETWORK TO STOP THE NEXT PANDEMIC

6 minutes

How can we stop the next pandemic before it starts?

Disease researchers Pardis Sabeti and Christian Happi introduce Sentinel, an early warning system that detects and tracks viral threats in real time -- and could help stop them before they spread.

Learn more about this cutting-edge technology that powers the system and how the Sentinel team is helping scientists and health workers during the coronavirus pandemic. (This ambitious plan is part of the Audacious Project, TED's initiative to inspire and fund global change.)
