Description: Joyce Matthys shares her experiences as a naturalist and conchologist, as well as some of the seashells she has collected, when she presents a program for Village members, volunteers and their guests. The program is about shells and mollusks. It will include a documentary that Joyce created for the National Shell Museum about shells and mollusks, the animals that create seashells. It played throughout the day at the museum for almost 20 years.
Joyce and her husband Ken travelled to Sanibel Island on SW Florida's coast in 1989 and became interested in seashells. What started as a hobby, quickly became a passion. Joyce became an education volunteer at the National Shell Museum in 1995 and continued until Hurricane Ian hit the island in 2022 and severely damaged the museum. She also was a presenter for the Road Scholar educational tours (aka Elderhostel) for 20 years.
There will be a 16-foot display of interesting shells from around the world as well as from Oregon's coastal waters including the “Oregon State Shell,” and a little bag of shells to take home.
Joyce is a trusted WLLO Village volunteer and we are excited to learn more about one of her interests and area of expertise. Come join us and learn about fascinating sea creatures with Joyce!
