Description: Rank Choice Voting - What is it? - Virtual via Zoom Where: Online via Zoom Registration Required: Click on this event for a registration link. Description: Ranked Choice Voting will be on the ballot this November. Oregon is the first state in which the Legislature approved sending the question to voters. In a ranked choice voting system, voters have the option to rank candidates in order of preference instead of selecting only one candidate.
To find out who wins, votes are counted in a series of rounds. In each round, one of two things happens: either a winning candidate is identified and elected by winning at least 50% of the vote, or the candidate in last place is eliminated and voters who ranked that candidate as their first choice will have their votes counted for their next choice. This process continues until someone wins by at list 50% of the vote. Click here to watch a 90 second video about how it works.
At this Zoom session, Meg Wade (The Oregon Statewide Organizer with Represent.US) will provide further explanation, and she will be able to answer your questions.
