Description: Getting Ready for Portland’s New Government and Voting System
This two-part workshop will introduce the big changes lying ahead for Portland’s government, from the new job-descriptions for our elected officials to the reorganization of the city's workforce and finances. Then we will deeply into how to vote under the new ranked choice voting (RCV) system to ensure that your vote counts to the greatest extent possible. This will be a strictly non-partisan, interactive workshop, including live voting in a mock RCV election.
Presenters: Wynne Furth leads the Portland League of Women Voters Know Your New Government team. She is a former city attorney and current member of First Unitarian Church of Portland. Melanie Billings-Yun heads the Portland League of Women Voters’ Ranked Choice voting team. Previously, she was co-chair of the Portland Charter Commission, which crafted the changes to the city’s form of government and electoral system that were approved by voters in 2022 and will be implemented this November.
