Description:  It usually starts small – perhaps running a few errands or preparing some hot meals. Maybe you don’t even see yourself as a caregiver yet. Or sometimes the changes can be more dramatic and sudden. But as your loved ones   age, they will probably need more help. And perhaps you will too. It can be a struggle to maintain independence, know what resources are available to help and how to navigate the system.

If you currently provide care for an aging loved one, expect to do so in the next few years, or are concerned about your future, join AARP Oregon [oraarp@aarp.org] for this FREE workshop. Come hear from two Oregon caregiving experts Ruth Cohen (Caregiving Conversations with Significant Others) and Dr. Vicki Schmall (Packing your Caregiving Basket) and our community partners, the Alzheimer’s Association and Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services.

Speakers:
Dr. Vicki Schmall is Executive Director and Gerontology & Training Specialist with Aging Concerns in West Linn, Oregon. She is also Professor Emeritus of Oregon State University, where she worked for nearly 25 years, serving as the Director of the OSU Program on Gerontology and the Gerontology Specialist in the OSU Extension Service. She has conducted over 2,500 workshops for staff of health care organizations and community agencies, families, older adults, and professionals.  Dr. Schmall is lead author of the book, The Caregiver Helpbook: Powerful Tools for Caregiving and is well known for the development of many aging-related training programs and educational materials, including Taking Care of You: Powerful Tools for Caregiving, a six-week series training program for family caregivers to older adults, for Legacy Health System. The program, which is currently in over 42 states enhances caregivers’ self-efficacy and self-care. In 2007, the program received a national award from Met-Life and the National Alliance on Caregiving.
