Movie this Month: Hope Gap (2020) The story of a couple who have just about everything a middle-class retired couple could want – security, a lovely house on the English south coast, their health – apart from a happy marriage. Low-key and emotionally blunted history teacher Edward (Bill Nighy, giving one of his best performances in years) has fallen out of love with his perpetually critical, intellectually rigorous wife Grace (Annette Bening), who has been compiling an anthology of poetry for years. When their adult son Jamie (Josh O’Connor, exceedingly good at projecting shy vulnerability beneath a superficially cheery demeanor) comes for a visit, Edward calmly reveals his plans to end the marriage and move out whilst they have tea and toast at the kitchen table, forcing Jamie to act as a reluctant mediator between his muddled, distant father and raging, wounded mother. Through stages of shock, disbelief and anger - and with support from her son - Grace ultimately regains her footing while learning it's never too late to be happy.
